I am a sustainability and education consultant. Previously I was a lecturer in sustainable energy. I was originally a mechanical engineer, and later a sociologist of environmental technology, focussing on institutional barriers to wind power. I have long been interested in what motivates people's behaviours in education and sustainability practices. I am now studying psychology to better understand the psychology of climate inaction and unsustainability. I hope to integrate this with an understanding of political and institutional barriers to sustainability. I am strongly committed to social justice. I occasionally write satirical verse, particularly about climate inaction.

The Engineer Knows Best

by Andrea Bunting (2010)

Having been an engineer for much of my working life, I need to get this off my chest . . .  (Yes - it's satire!@)

The trouble with you greenies is you don’t appreciate
our human ingenuity, the marvels we create!
You’re not in awe of all the hi-tech wonders we design.
You sneer at them and claim that they’re destroying humankind.

You bad-mouth us and say we don’t respect the planet earth.
Of course we do! We know how much its minerals are worth.
You gripe about resources that on earth are nearly spent.
We’ll mine the moon! The asteroids! And hey, we’ll pay no rent!

You’re scared of global warming; while we engineers are keen
to build the biggest air-con plant the world ever has seen!
Don’t fuss about the drought and its effect on farming land.
Just stand back and admire our desalination plant!

You talk of species dying out – that isn’t out concern.
Biodiversity is not an engineering term.
So what if some environments are dead or under threat.
We’re building virtual replicas. They’re on the Internet!

You say our techno fixes make more problems down the track.
That’s future work for engineers. There’s nothing wrong with that!
So greenies stop your rallying, it’s futile to protest.
Just leave it to the engineers. We truly know what’s best.
